This white paper discusses Desktop Virtualization and the impact on desktop management challenges.
This white paper discusses the following:
- The challenges for desktop management in a pre-Desktop Virtualization world
- How these challenges are addressed by Desktop Virtualization
- Issues that are not well addressed by Desktop Virtualization
- Their view of how to best address these remaining issues
While Desktop Virtualization puts the desktop into the data center, it is not a panacea for desktop delivery. Desktop Virtualization works best as part of a comprehensive Desktop Delivery approach which focuses on the most efficient way to get applications to the end user and meet business and IT needs, not just a PC equivalent. Desktop Delivery proposes the dynamic assembly of a ‘new and pristine’ high performing desktop with personalized set of applications and settings every time a user logs on.

Forrester has found that application availability, application and data security, and application performance now represent the top three desktop operations concerns.
The desktop manager’s role has changed dramatically over the last few years. Five years ago, most desktop managers focused on software deployment and patch management and measured their success with factors like meeting patch compliance objectives. Today is a different story. These skills are still required, but desktop managers are now held accountable for security metrics as well.

Learn why the TCO of a server-based computing deployment used to deliver all applications to users is around 50% lower than that of an unmanaged desktop deployment.
Server-Based Computing (SBC) is a mature client architecture that delivers substantial Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings when it is implemented in the right circumstances and with the right group of users. Gartner compares the TCO of SBC to that of traditional PCs in several scenarios to explain where the savings take place.
